History

Solar energy has been around for a long time. Solar energy was used in the ancient times, in the 3rd century B.C. when

Greeks and Romans used the sun's rays to reflect on mirrors to light torches. In 20 A.D., the Chinese used mirrors for burning

things.

Nothing really changed with solar power until the 1700s. In 1767, Swiss scientist Horace de Saussere made is first solar

collector in the world.

Then, in 1830, a man named John Hershel figured out how to use a solar collector to cook food. Yet the photovoltaic effect wasn't

discovered until 1839 by Edmond Becquerel, a French physicist. Then in 1860, August Mouchet invented a solar powered steam

engine with the help of his partner, Abel Pifre. 13 years later, Willoughby Smith found the photoconductivity in the mineral

selenium. In the late 1800s, Frank Shuman built the first solar powered water pump.

In the early 1900s, the first solar pond was discovered in Transylvania. William Bailey makes a solar collector out of copper in

1908. Surrounded with new technology, scientist Russel Ohl makes a solar cell of silicon in 1941 and in 1948 Maria Telkes

designed a solar powered heating system for homes. 1954 was the first time people used newly invented solar cells on solar

panels to collect energy. In 1955, Frank Bridger built the first passive solar heated building. Only twenty-five years later, the first solar airplane

took off powered by silicon cells. The first solar powered car was driven in 1982 by Hans Tholstrup. Later, in 1990, the Hubble

Telescope went into space powered by solar energy. The price of solar energy was very expensive in 1912, it was 7 times larger than the price of it right now.

The Icare, the most advanced solar powered aircraft, flew over Germany in

1996.

In the year of 2000,an airplane took flight at NASA with solar panels on its wings. More recently, Solar One, a CSP (Concentrating Solar

Power) plant in Nevada came online with a facility of 64 megawatts in 2007. Solar power hasprogressed a long way since it was

first used in the ancient times.
