Hydro -- Disadvantages

Disadvantages of Hydropower

  • Dams have a limited lifespan; they eventually overflow and break, causing enormous property damage and fatalities
  • Useful dams may be eliminated when environmental costs are determined to high
  • It is very expensive to build dams
  • There are 80,000 dams in the world but only 2,400 of them produce electricity
  • Can cause geological problems like earthquakes

  • The Three Gorges Dam in China displaced over 1.2 million people when it flooded 13 cities, 140 towns and 1,350 villages
  • Three Gorges Dam cost $2.3 billion dollars
  • Nutrients (silt) get trapped in the reservoirs
  • Algae and weeds grow excessively and emit greenhouse gases, which in turn promotes global warming
  • There are many places where hydropower could be harvested in Latin America, Central Africa, India and China but is not
